Computer Systems Support Supervisor (Not to exceed $84k)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This position exists in the County Hospital and involves responsibility for supervising various technology operations, support processes, and technical support staff.  This position coordinates and performs support of micro-computer equipment and peripherals, software systems and end-user departments.  Supervision is exercised over the work of Computer Systems Support Technicians.  The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Information Systems.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

· Monitors and controls project and technical support staff work-flow to ensure that overall work objectives are achieved, completion deadline/production schedules are met, and performance, availability, and system up-time objectives are achieved;

·  Coordinates coverage of the help desk to ensure availability for end-user support;

·  Assists technical support staff with support activities as required;

·  Provides primary education for computer system end-users, schedules and conducts training sessions, and prepared instructional material to assist users in efficient use of computer resources;

·  Ensures that hardware and software installation, testing and maintenance are regularly performed;

·  Assists information systems staff in research, evaluation and recommendation of hardware and micro-computer software purchases;

· Implements and monitors hardware and software components for compliance with information systems policies;

·  Installs micro-computer hardware, software and peripherals;

·  Monitors performance of current hardware and software platforms, and recommends upgrades and enhancements as appropriate;

·  Utilizes client server software to provide system security access;

·  Runs diagnostic software to troubleshoot the network system;

·  Provides help desk service and support on hardware and micro-computer based software issues and communicates issues to appropriate information systems staff;

· Assists technical staff in the design and installation of network security systems;

· Performs in-house repairs, coordinates outside repair resources, and schedules computer system maintenance and upgrades to minimize downtime;

·  Facilitates day-to-day operations of the information systems department including ordering supplies, scheduling support staff coverage, and maintaining proper levels of system and data backups;

·  Prioritizes order of pending problems and schedules installations and repairs;

·  Monitor computer security system to detect violators;

·  Performs data processing tasks as required to support other departments;

·  Prepares reports regarding repairs, volume of calls and response times;

·  Monitors network telecommunications circuits to service providers and reports problems;

·  Explains installation and maintenance procedures and time frames to end-users;

·  Ensures physical security of confidential information and data. 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

· Thorough knowledge of micro-computer terminology and concepts relating to network user support;

·  Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of providing micro-computer network user support;

·  Thorough knowledge of project management concepts;

·  Ability to schedule, organize and supervise support staff;

·  Ability to read and interpret procedures required to support end-users in a micro-computer network;

·  Ability to diagnose micro-computer problems;

·  Ability to prepare written reports;

·  Ability to follow oral and written directions;

·  Ability to install, configure and troubleshoot micro-computer components;

·  Ability to communicate effectively;

·  Ability to refer problems or requests to personnel to deal with complicated technical situations which arise;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   Either:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems technology, electrical engineering technology, or related field; or

B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associate’s degree in computer science, information systems technology, electrical engineering technology, or related field, and two years of experience in a micro-computer help desk/user support or installation position which included problem analysis, provision of direct user support for problem/question resolution and/or the installation or configuration and support of micro-computer hard and software; or

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
