In 1929, the citizens of Lewis County decided they needed a local hospital. In 1930, the County of Lewis purchased the land for a county hospital on the top of a hill leading into town.  The cost of the land was $4,500.  In 1930, the construction of the hospital began.  Seven months later, in August 1931, the construction phase ended and a brand new healthcare facility opened its doors to a grateful community.

It was a sturdy building built of solid brick with six towering white posts marking the main entrance. Today, 89 years later, the main campus encompasses 14.5 acres and offers over 220,000 square feet of floor space. dedicated to the provision of high quality healthcare to the residents of the tri-county area.

Lewis Health System offers inpatient and outpatient care services and a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department to meet the health needs of over 30,000 county residents and seasonal visitors. The system includes a 25-bed critical access hospital, 160-bed nursing home, three specialty centers (surgery, orthopedics, and women's health), internal medicine and family practice clinics located in Beaver Falls, Copenhagen, Lowville, and Lyons Falls, a school-based health clinic at South Lewis Central School, hospice, and home health services.

Not only do we provide critical health care and 24/7 emergency services, our facility continues to contribute vital resources to our communities through jobs, tax revenue, and capital improvements.  With over 650 employees, LCHS is also the largest employer in the County.  LCHS spends millions per year on goods and services necessary to maintain our facilities.  These dollars are reinvested in the County through employee and hospital spending which directly impacts the local economy.
