Nurse Manager Long term care (Not to exceed 100K)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Supervises the nursing services in the management of the long-term care facility; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is supervisory work involving responsibility for maintaining high standards of professional nursing services in the management of the long-term care facility.  The work is performed under general supervision with latitude allowed for instructing, planning and making assignments to subordinates.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

·  Evaluates and directs the care of residents on an assigned unit by doing rounds, reviewing documentation, interacting with residents, family and staff;

·  Promotes interdisciplinary process in planning and implementing care by collaborating regularly with other departments;

·  Assesses patient nursing care needs and prepares and carries out a nursing care plan;

·  Collaborates with medical staff in care and treatment of patients;

·  Provides for accurately descriptive records of the medical treatment and nursing care of patients;

·  Checks physician’s orders, medication cards and charts to insure prompt and accurate execution of orders;

·  Reviews and follows-up on incidents/reports;

· Instructs and assists Registered Professional Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and auxiliary personnel on nursing problems, ward management and related activities;

·  Coordinates the services rendered by other departments in the interest of effective management and patient welfare;

·  Supervises and evaluates the activities of professional subordinates in the bedside care of patients and the administration of medications and treatments in a unit or ward;

·  Takes an active role on the Skin Team, Weight Team and Restraint Team;

· Completes Minimum Data Sets, Resident Assessment Protocols and Interdisciplinary Care Plans accurately and in a timely manner;

·  Participates in admission process to keep census at the appropriate level;

·  Performs a variety of personnel management, ward and unit management and supply distribution activities;

·  Assists with interviewing and orientating new staff;

·  Assists in the formulation and execution of policies and procedures;

·  Acts as Supervising Nurse in his/her absence or as directed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of professional nursing techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices and skill in their application; good knowledge of Long Term Care codes and standards; working knowledge of ward management, clinical unit management, and hospital supply distribution practices; working knowledge of materia medica, hospital dietetics, sanitation and personal hygiene; ability to supervise the administration of the therapeutic measures prescribed; ability to secure the cooperation of others; ability to deal with staff performance problems promptly; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability understand and carry out technical oral and written instructions; good observation; mental alertness; thoroughness; cheerfulness; patience; emotional stability; sympathetic attitude toward the sick; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing; or

B) Graduation from a regionally accredited three-year school of professional nursing and one year of experience in professional or practical nursing activities; or

C) Graduation from an accredited two-year school of professional nursing and two years of experience in professional or practical nursing activities; or

D)  An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (A), (B) and (C).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:

Eligibility for a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.  Possession of the license at the time of appointment.
