hospice Volunteer Coordinator ($25.21-$29.58)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position exists in the County Hospice and involves responsibility to provide leadership and supervision in developing and implementing a program to recruit, train and utilize volunteers in a variety of capacities. The program has the goals of coordinating with the community to provide volunteer services, demonstrate how volunteers can be trained and placed to extend a support network of family and friends and complement health care services. The work is performed under general supervision of the Hospice Nurse Coordinator with leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over all volunteers and volunteer groups assisting with the program. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
· Plans, administers and evaluates the hospice volunteer program;
· Educates, trains and orients volunteers regarding hospice philosophy, services, policies, procedures and practices by providing initial and on-going educational opportunities;
· Develops a plan of care for the volunteer to follow when visiting patients;
· Develops publicity and news releases to recruit volunteers utilizing all forms of public media including newspapers, public notices, and public service announcements on radio and television;
· Interviews, selects and assigns volunteers to an appropriate task through assessment of volunteers’ interests, skills and program needs;
· Monitors and evaluates volunteers’ performance and ensures the volunteers’ compliance with all agency policies and procedures;
· Assists with public relations events and is actively involved in increasing community awareness of the hospice program, its mission and goals and the volunteer program;
· Plans and conducts monthly volunteer support meetings;
· Evaluates program needs with the Hospice Coordinator in order to effectively deliver volunteer services by monitoring agency goals;
· Maintains personnel records for each volunteer, reviews volunteers’ documentation, records their hours worked on a regular basis and prepares related required reports;
· Participates in meetings and conferences designed to provide information regarding volunteer services;
· Serves as a member of the hospice interdisciplinary team and provides input for the development of the patient’s plan of care;
· Provides input for the hospice quality improvement program;
· Speaks before groups explaining the program and how to become a volunteer.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of recruiting and interviewing volunteers; good knowledge of community services and resources which are available; ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with members of the community to further volunteer programs goals; ability to plan and organize programs to insure optimum use of volunteer services; ability to recruit, train and coordinate the work of volunteers; ability to provide a supportive and sensitive approach to volunteers and patient and family needs; ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team; ability to speak before a group; ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports; ability to plan and develop a public relations campaign to promote interest in the hospice volunteer program; ability to prepare news release and media information in a clear, concise manner; ability to supervise the work of others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college with an associate degree in human services, human resources, social science, liberal arts, or related field, and one year of full-time experience in a supervisory capacity; or
B) Two years of full-time experience in a human services field, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; or
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
